Psychosomatic/somatic/somatisation

The term somatic refers to the cells of the body.

Somatisation is when physical symptoms develop through stress or emotional problems.

Psychosomatic refers to a physical disease that is thought to be caused, or made worse, by mental factors such as stress and anxiety. In certain cases, mental factors may cause physical symptoms where no physical disease can be found.

All illnesses can be considered to be psychosomatic, as they inevitably involve the mind's reaction to a physical illness.

In some cases, psychological factors seem to play a particularly important part. They can influence not only the cause of the illness, but can also worsen the symptoms and affect the course of the disorder. It is these illnesses that are termed psychosomatic disorders.
