Irritable bowel syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional
disorder that affects the digestive system. It causes abdominal pain, diarrhoea
and constipation. There is no cure, but most people can learn to control and
live with their irritable bowel.
The exact cause of IBS is not clear, but it may have
something to do with over- activity of parts of the gut. With over-activity,
the brain may send mixed messages to the gut, causing it to over respond. Also
intolerance to certain food types may play a part in some cases.
An infection or bacteria in the gut by way of a virus or
other germ may 'sensitise' or 'trigger' the gut in some way to cause
persisting symptoms of IBS. IBS is not caused by an ongoing gut infection. Even
under examination, the gut appears normal and there are no immediate signs of
anything wrong.
