Wet macular degeneration
Wet macular degeneration refers to the wearing out of the macula which sits on the surface at the centre of the retina. This degeneration of the macula is usually age-related and so it can also be known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
AMD is divided into wet and dry, and there is no treatment yet available for dry AMD. In most cases of dry AMD, the vision slowly deteriorates by gradual central blurring, and colours fade.
Wet AMD accounts for about 10 per cent of people with AMD, and it occurs because of bleeding and scarring which is caused by new blood vessels growing behind the retina. Wet AMD can develop quickly and sometimes responds to treatment in the early stages.
