Syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria which is usually spread by means of sexual intercourse, although it can also be transmitted by a mother to her child in the womb.

The medical community divides the progression of the disease of syphilis into two stages: primary and secondary.

Primary syphilis symptoms include skin lesions, usually around the genitalia, but can also appear anywhere on the body. There can also be swelling of the lymph nodes.

Secondary syphilis usually occurs about six to eight weeks after infection. A rash appears on the skin around the body, and this is when the patient is at their most infectious. Other symptoms of syphilis occur at this stage, such as:

  • enlarged lymph nodes
  • fever
  • headache
  • malaise
  • meningismus
  • sore throat
  • weight loss
