Stiff joints

Stiff joints fall into three types, as follows:

1. Pain on moving the joint.

2. Loss of motion in the joint.

3. The first sign of reduced range of motion in the joint.

The first type, which is pain on moving a joint, could be a form of arthritis or osteoarthritis. The second type, which is loss of motion in the joint, could also be caused by osteoarthritis — but it may also be rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis. The third type, which is the first sign of reduced range of motion in a joint, will require medical attention to determine and treat the cause.
