Skin cancer
Skin cancer is generally a malignant tumour that develops on the outside of the skin, and so it is clearly visible.
The most common types of skin cancer — basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer — are relatively harmless, tend not to spread and are thought to be caused by too much sun exposure. However, melanoma skin cancer is much more dangerous, can spread quite quickly and can be fatal.
Symptoms of skin cancer (benign and malignant) include:
- areas of skin that have broken down or that ulcerate with no obvious cause, and that do not heal within four weeks
- spots or sores that continue to itch, hurt, scab, crust or bleed for more than four weeks
- spots or sores that don’t heal within four weeks
