Phobia
A phobia is a psychological condition that takes the form of a morbid or irrational fear of a thing or being whether or not that thing or being is essentially benign. When a phobia makes it impossible for us to carry on with our daily lives, then it is usually diagnosed as an anxiety disorder and treated accordingly.
Phobias are usually categorised into one of three types:
- agoraphobia — fear of leaving home or a small familiar 'safe' area, and of possible panic attacks that might follow
- social phobia — fear of other people or social situations, such as in performance anxiety
- specific phobias — fear of a single specific panic trigger such as spiders, snakes, dogs, elevators, water, waves, flying, balloons …............
