Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition affecting movements such as walking, talking, and writing. It is named after Dr James Parkinson who first identified Parkinson's as a specific condition.
With Parkinson's, there is a loss of nerve cells in the brain. These cells are responsible for producing a chemical known as dopamine, which allows messages to be sent to the parts of the brain that co-ordinate movement. With the depletion of these cells, parts of the brain are unable to function normally and thus movement is affected.
The symptoms of the Parkinson’s disease usually start on one side of the body and then progress to both sides. They include:
- inability to walk normally — usually only capable of a slow shuffle
- shaking (muscle tremor), often starting in the hand
- slow movement
- stiffness (rigidity), which causes limbs to feel difficult to move
