Learning difficulties

Learning difficulties in children are viewed differently in the UK and the US.

In the UK, it refers to a range of cognitive disorders in young people that, in severe cases, are regarded as indicative of low intelligence. However, this causal connection between cognitive disorders and intelligence is not made in the US, and the person with learning difficulties is seen as someone who just has trouble performing specific tasks.

In both cases, though, learning difficulties covers a broad range of skills to do with speaking, listening, reading, writing and spelling (dyslexia), reasoning, organising information and numeracy.
