Heavy metal poisoning

Heavy metal poisoning can be caused by ingesting, inhaling or absorbing through the skin or mucous membranes the following metals or semi-metals: arsenic, bismuth, cadmium, iron, lead, mercury and thallium.

Once absorbed, the heavy metals can combine with other body chemicals and cause damage to many organs. The most common metal in the UK that people are poisoned with is lead, although there is a debate that dental fillings cause mercury poisoning. Mercury is also found in fish, pesticides, wood preservatives and some medicines.

Symptoms of heavy metal poisoning include:

  • metallic taste in the mouth
  • severe abdominal pain with vomiting
  • diarrhoea and black stools
  • lethargy, muscle cramps and weakness
  • headache
  • drowsiness
  • confusion
  • seizures
  • insomnia
  • coma
