Burns

A burn is caused when the skin is exposed to a variety of elements such as fire, frost and ice, electricity, chemicals, light, radiation or friction.

Burns are commonly divided into first, second, third and fourth degree burns.

First degree burns are the least dangerous, more superficial and include sunburn. Second degree burns usually manifest as a blister and the affected area penetrates deeper into the skin. Third and fourth degree burns are much more serious. The symptoms of third degree burns include charring, scarring and hair loss, while fourth degree burns involve muscle, tendon and ligament damage and can be so serious as to be potentially fatal.

Burns can also lead to shock, infection, electrolyte imbalance and respiratory disorders.
