AIDS/HIV
AIDS stands for
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and is known as an immune system disorder as
it is caused by a virus that attacks the immune system. The virus’s name is
known as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV
for short.
HIV is
transmitted through direct contact with other bodily fluids that contain the
virus, such as blood, breast milk, pre-ejaculatory fluid, semen and vaginal
fluid. Babies in the womb of an HIV-infected mother can also catch the virus
before they are born.
Because the HIV
attacks the immune system, it leaves its victims vulnerable to other
potentially fatal diseases, infections and tumours and this is what leads to
the AIDS syndrome of illnesses.
It is not possible
to diagnose AIDs or HIV infection on the HIV symptoms
alone, and a medical test is necessary to check for presence of the virus.
